Monday’s game at Mohun Bagan didn’t happen on the field, but it captivated many Mohun Bagan supporters glued to their TVs. Mumbai City FC faced off against Odisha FC, with Mohun Bagan fans hoping for a draw or a Mumbai loss. However, those hopes were dashed as Odisha FC defeated Mumbai City FC 2-1, keeping Mumbai at the top of the ISL table. This result sets the stage for what could be a crucial match between Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City next Monday, perhaps akin to a ‘final’.

Following Monday’s victory, Mumbai City FC now sits comfortably with 47 points from 21 matches. Mohun Bagan, having played 20 matches, holds onto second place with 42 points. Odisha, in third place, has 39 points from 21 matches, with no hopes left for the league shield.

Before anything else, Mohun Bagan must fulfil several conditions. Their first challenge is to defeat Bengaluru FC on Thursday. After losing to East Bengal in their previous match, Sunil Chhetri’s Bengaluru FC lost their playoff hopes. If they can overcome Bengaluru in their next match, Mohun Bagan could potentially turn the final match against Mumbai City into a decisive battle. However, any loss of points in their remaining matches could end their aspirations. If Mohun Bagan loses to Bengaluru on Thursday, they will remain at 45 points after 21 matches, eliminating their chance for a league shield.
The upcoming Monday match between Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City could indeed determine the fate of this season’s ISL crown.
