Mohun Bagan has moved closer to clinching the League Shield with a commanding victory over Bengaluru FC. Against Bengaluru FC, there was no other option for Mohun Bagan but to secure three points. Winning this match was crucial for their chances to stay in the League Shield race, and that’s exactly what Dimitri Petratos and Manvir Singh achieved with their outstanding performance today. The Green-Maroon Brigade returns from the Kanteerava Stadium with all three points in their bag.
Mohun Bagan took the lead in the 17th minute through a goal from Hector Bustos. Bengaluru FC had opportunities to equalize in the first half, including a penalty awarded to Sunil Chhetri by referee Rahul Gupta in the box. However, Indian captain Chhetri failed to convert the penalty in the 40th minute, allowing Mohun Bagan to maintain their 1-0 lead until halftime. Despite several goal-scoring chances in their favor in the first half, Bengaluru FC couldn’t capitalize.
The second half saw Manvir Singh extending Mohun Bagan’s lead to 2-0 in the 51st minute with a goal from a Joni Kauko assist. Just three minutes later, Manvir Singh scored again to make it 3-0 for the Green-Maroon Brigade. Anirudh Thapa added another goal in the 54th minute from Dimitri Petratos’s pass, and Armando Sádiku scored the fourth goal for Mohun Bagan in the 60th minute.
Despite numerous attempts by Monirul and Suresh towards the end of the match, Bengaluru FC failed to break through Mohun Bagan’s defense. The match concluded with a resounding 4-0 victory for Mohun Bagan, earning them crucial points in the league standings. With 45 points from an equal number of matches played, Mohun Bagan currently leads the league table. A defeat for Mumbai City FC on Monday could see the League Shield making its way to the Green-Maroon Citadel this season.
