Mohun Bagan celebrated a festive season derby win, defeating East Bengal 2-0 in a dominating performance. Goals from Jason Cummings and Dimitri Petratos secured the win, though the margin could have been wider as the Mariners missed several clear chances. Greg Stewart was tireless throughout, while East Bengal’s struggles continued under new coach Oscar Bruzon.
The much-hyped Kolkata derby kicked off at 7:30 PM, but the excitement began much earlier. By morning, fans in team jerseys were spotted gearing up for the event. Unfortunately, the 20,000-strong East Bengal supporters were left dejected as their team suffered its fifth straight loss, placing them at the bottom of the ISL standings with zero points. Mohun Bagan, meanwhile, climbed to second place with 10 points from five matches.
While the Mariners basked in the victory, East Bengal’s dugout saw intense discussions between Bruzon and assistant coach Bino George. A clear indication that the Spaniard has a mountain to climb to revitalize his squad’s performance.
