In the inaugural match of the Kolkata Premier Division League at Kishore Bharati Krirangan, Mohammedan, the reigning champions for the past three years, faced off against “Giant Killers” Wari Athletic Club at Kolkata Maidan. The match ended with Mohammedan sporting a victorious smile after a 6-0 goal spree against Wari. Sajal Bag and Lal Thawngkima scored two goals each, while Ashlley Kohl and Thokchom Edison Singh contributed one goal apiece.
Having qualified for the I-League after winning the I-League 2nd Division last season, Mohammedan has appointed André Cherrinichev as their coach for the I-League. Hakim Sekandar has taken charge of the senior team responsibilities in the Kolkata League. Like the other two principal teams in Kolkata, Mohammedan’s junior team is also participating in this season’s league.
Sajal Bag, who played for Neroca FC in the South Manipur District last year, was the highlight of Mohammedan’s formation. He scored two goals today, totaling a whopping 90 minutes. His performance in central midfield was breathtaking. It’s understood that he is being considered for Mohammedan SC and ISL.
After the interval, Wari struggled against Mohammedan Sporting’s dominance. If they had utilized the first-half opportunities, the match might not have been so one-sided. In the second half, Sajal started the scoring spree in the 54th minute, leading with a 2-0 scoreline. Ashlley’s goal in the 65th minute widened the gap. Thokchom added another goal in the 75th minute, making it 4-0. Lal Thawngkima scored two goals in the 78th and 85th minutes. However, observing Mohammedan’s performance today, it seemed like they started this season right where they left off last time.
