History was made as Mohammedan Sporting played their first-ever ISL match at Kishore Bharati Stadium on Monday. However, their journey began on a sour note as they lost 1-0 to a spirited Northeast United side.
Despite enjoying significant ball possession, Mohammedan struggled to create meaningful chances in the first half. Northeast United, buoyed by their Durand Cup success, grew stronger as the match progressed. Both teams showcased scrappy football early on, with neither creating clear-cut opportunities.
The decisive moment came in the 94th minute when Alauddin Azray’s powerful shot beat Mohammedan goalkeeper Podum Chettri, securing three points for Northeast. Mohammedan had their moments, including a second-half shot by Alex that went wide, but their lack of finishing cost them dearly.
Coach Andrey Chernyshov acknowledged the challenge of transitioning to the ISL, emphasizing the need for improvement as the team adjusts to the top flight.
