Mohammedan Sporting came agonizingly close to defeating East Bengal in the Super Six stage of the Kolkata League but had to settle for a 2-2 draw at Naihati Stadium on Friday. Twice Mohammedan took the lead, only for East Bengal to claw back and earn a crucial point that keeps them on course for the league title.
Mohammedan struck first in the 20th minute when Bamia Samad converted Joseph’s pass with a clinical finish. However, East Bengal’s Jaison TK equalized in the 40th minute, sending the game into halftime tied 1-1. Early in the second half, Mohammedan regained the lead after a defensive error allowed Soraisham Singh to find the back of the net.
Once again, Jaison proved to be East Bengal’s savior, scoring his second goal in the 76th minute to level the match. East Bengal nearly snatched a winner in stoppage time, but the Mohammedan goalkeeper brilliantly saved Hiraman Mondal’s powerful shot. Despite the draw, East Bengal remains at the top of the table with 41 points from 15 matches. Mohammedan, meanwhile, continues to fight for pride in what has been an underwhelming campaign compared to last season.
