India’s national football team closed out a disappointing year with a 1-1 draw against Malaysia in a friendly at Hyderabad’s Gachibowli Stadium. Despite the return of defender Sandesh Jhingan after a 10-month injury layoff, Manolo Márquez Roca’s side failed to secure a victory, leaving fans frustrated.
India started well, creating numerous chances, but a 19th-minute error by goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh handed Malaysia the lead. A misjudged clearance attempt allowed Malaysia’s Paulo Josué to score with ease. Earlier, an Apuiya mistake had also led to a close call, with Anwar Ali stepping in to avert disaster.
India equalized in the 39th minute through Rahul Bheke’s header off a Brandon Fernandes corner. Despite dominating possession and relentless attacking, poor finishing cost India the win. Malaysia nearly capitalized on a late chance, which could have compounded India’s woes.
With Roca yet to taste victory as India’s coach, the draw adds to mounting concerns. India’s inability to finish chances or control midfield highlights significant challenges ahead. The national team and their coach face an uphill battle to regain form in the coming year.
