Heroic Nine-Man East Bengal Hold Mohammedan, Earn First ISL Point

In a historic ISL debut clash between East Bengal and Mohammedan, drama and controversy took center stage. Despite being reduced to nine players within the first 30 minutes, Oscar Bruzon’s East Bengal displayed unmatched resilience to secure a goalless draw and their first point of the season.
The chaos began in the 29th minute when a melee led to Amarjit Singh Kiyam being fouled by Nandhakumar. Initially booked with a yellow card, Amarjit’s appeal resulted in Nandha receiving a direct red. Moments later, Mahesh Singh’s frustration earned him a second yellow, leaving East Bengal with just nine players.
Mohammedan dominated possession but squandered multiple opportunities. East Bengal’s defense, led by goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Singh Gill, held firm under relentless pressure. A late free-kick from Talal and a near-miss by Diomantakos almost saw East Bengal snatch victory.
This gritty performance not only halted Mohammedan’s plans but also offered East Bengal a vital morale boost. Meanwhile, the result added pressure on Mohammedan coach Andre Chernishev, with questions mounting over the team’s lack of clinical finishing.
